Ric Flair wasn’t kidding when he spent decades bragging about blowing more money on spilled liquor than most people made. The Nature Boy says one wrestling weekend ended with him staring down a $23,000 bar bill after nearly three days of partying.
Flair opened up about his wildest spending during a conversation with Roman Sharf. When Sharf asked how crazy the partying became at the height of Flair’s run, Flair admitted it depended heavily on where he was.
“It was out of control depending on the city. If it was Las Vegas, it was really bad. If it was Chicago, it was really bad. If it was New York, it was really bad. The China Club here almost killed me in New York.”
Then Sharf asked for the biggest bar tab Flair could remember. Flair didn’t have to think very hard.
“Oh, easy. Um, I think it was $23,000.”
Flair said the bill came during a Crockett Cup weekend at the Baltimore Harbor Marriott and stretched across multiple days. According to Flair, he had access to a private elevator leading to the suite, and the party quickly got completely out of hand. Flair then painted a picture of just how wild the hotel had become by the next morning.
“It was over two days at the Baltimore Harbor Marriott. We had the Crockett Cup going there.”
“And I had the private elevator to the suite. And so this thing started on Friday and there was guys in the lobbies walking around looking for their wives at breakfast. They were all upstairs with us.”
Closing time apparently wasn’t going to stop Flair either. He said he paid the hotel manager another $2,000 just to get the alcohol flowing again. By the time Flair finally headed downstairs to leave, nearly three days had passed. Then came the bill.
“And I’ll tell you, this never happens. When the bar closed down, I gave the manager two grand to open the bar back up to bring booze up to the suite. You know what I mean?”
“So, when I went downstairs to check out, this is after almost three days, right? I put my credit card down on the thing and it literally bounced to 10 feet.”
Flair said he had to call Gary Jester because he needed to get out of the hotel and catch a flight, all while trying to figure out what to do about the massive charge.
“So, I called a guy named Gary Jester. I said, ‘Gary, get me down here. And I got to catch a plane.’”
A $23,000 drinking bill would be ridiculous now, never mind during Flair’s Crockett-era run. Somehow, though, a private suite full of people, another $2,000 just to reopen the bar and a credit card bouncing at checkout sounds exactly like the kind of Ric Flair story people would expect.
