Rey Mysterio is finally getting the cartoon treatment, but this was not some random Hollywood-style pitch that landed in his lap overnight. The WWE Hall of Famer says this idea has been living in his head for years.
During a panel with Going Ringside, Mysterio talked about Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness and made it clear that animation was always something he pictured for himself. Long before the project became real, Rey said he looked at his wrestling character and knew there was something there that could work outside the ring.
“Ever since I started wrestling and growing as a character, I always had this vision that I wanted one day to be able to do a cartoon.”
Rey said that feeling only grew stronger when wrestling-style animation started popping up on television. He specifically pointed to Mucha Lucha as one of the things that made him think his own masked character could live in that same kind of world.
“Imagine a Rey Mysterio cartoon would be really really cool.”
For someone who has spent decades making history in WWE, WCW, AAA, and beyond, moving into animation might sound like a major leap. Rey did not see it that way at all. When asked if he was nervous about stepping into a different lane, he shut that idea down fast.
“Nope, not at all. It was more excitement.”
That is because Rey did not view the cartoon as some strange new chapter. He saw it as something he had already been carrying with him for years, and once the chance finally came, he was ready to jump on it.
“It was more the passion coming out to be able to create something that I had already envisioned to do.”
Mysterio also gave major credit to the team that helped bring Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness to life. He said the timing finally lined up, and the right people came into the picture to make the project possible.
“I guess God just put the right team in front of me in order to proceed.”
Once the cartoon was officially brought to him, Rey said there was no dragging his feet. He was all in.
“Once the project was brought to my attention, I was like, let’s go. Let’s do this all the way, full force.”
One of the biggest selling points for fans is that this is not just Rey’s mask and name being slapped onto an animated character. Mysterio confirmed that he actually voiced himself in both Spanish and English, making his real voice part of the entire presentation.
“I did the voice over for Rey Mysterio in Spanish and in English.”
He wanted fans to know that when they watch the cartoon, they are hearing him throughout the show.
“My voice is throughout the whole cartoon.”
Rey also dropped an interesting detail about Enigma, the young sidekick in the series. According to Mysterio, the character has a very personal connection to his own life and is essentially tied to a younger version of himself.
“The little kid that is pretty much Rey Mysterio’s sidekick… it’s a very young Rey Mysterio by the name of Oscar.”
That name is not a throwaway either. Rey’s real first name is Oscar, and he made it clear that fans can figure out the deeper connection from there.
“You can obviously kind of follow the guideline there and imagine the story behind that.”
Mysterio also made sure to point out that Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness was not thrown together quickly. This was a long grind for the creative team, and Rey said plenty of time, effort, and emotion went into building the animated world.
“We invested a lot of time, a lot of effort, a lot of our heart and passion.”
Rey said the team behind the scenes put in the real heavy lifting, spending years designing, creating, and shaping the project into what it became.
“They’re the ones that created all the content, that spent hours, days, years, designing and creating.”
The hope now is that Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness can find a home in the United States and grow into something much bigger. Rey said the team already has its eyes on continuing the story if fans connect with it.
“If we’re able to bring this to the US, we want to continue with a season two, a season three, and keep growing.”
Still, Rey knows the fans are the ones who will decide how far this cartoon can go. If they love it, the door is open for much more.
“At the end of the day, it all kind of falls in the hands of the audience.”
Rey Mysterio has already turned his mask into one of the most recognizable symbols in wrestling history. Now, Rey Mysterio vs. The Darkness gives him a chance to take that legacy into animation, with his own voice, his own story, and a project he says he wanted for years.
