Dominik Mysterio may be the AAA Mega Champion, but Rey Mysterio doesn’t think that automatically makes his son a luchador. And according to Rey, that’s exactly why Dirty Dom doesn’t belong in WWE’s tournament to determine Roman Reigns’ next challenger.
Speaking on RAW Recap, Rey was asked why Dominik was left out of the AAA crossover tournament despite currently holding the biggest championship in the promotion. Rather than questioning WWE’s decision, Rey immediately pointed to something he believes separates Dominik from the wrestlers actually competing in it.
“Well, I could say, for one, he has never trained lucha libre. You know, he can say he’s the best luchador. Yeah, he does a couple moves here and there, but his training was always on the American side. He trained in Tampa, he trained in Canada, and he trained in San Diego.”
And Rey wasn’t talking about whether Dominik can hit a 619 or throw a few lucha-style moves into his matches. For him, being a luchador starts long before any of that.
“So when you speak about luchadores, you know, born and raised, that’s your bread and butter. That’s where you began. That’s where you got your ass kicked. You know, every time you stepped into the ring, they made you sweat, you threw up, you wanted to get out of the ring, but no, they pulled you back in.”
That’s an interesting distinction considering the championship currently sitting around Dominik’s waist. Dirty Dom has spent months declaring himself the face of AAA and the greatest luchador alive, but his own father doesn’t believe his wrestling upbringing qualifies him for the same category as someone who actually came through the lucha libre system.
“I think my concept of lucha is completely different from Dom’s concept.”
The question started popping up after WWE revealed the tournament featuring Penta, Laredo Kid, Psycho Clown, La Parka, Dragon Lee, Hijo de Dr. Wagner Jr., Rey Fenix and El Fiscal. The eventual winner will challenge Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship on the September 14 edition of RAW in Mexico City.
Penta has already punched his ticket to the next round after defeating Laredo Kid on August 10. Dominik, meanwhile, isn’t getting anywhere near Roman through this tournament.
For all the bragging Dirty Dom has done about ruling AAA, Rey Mysterio just drew a pretty brutal line between holding its biggest championship and actually being raised as a luchador. In Rey’s eyes, his son can call himself the best all he wants—he never went through what it takes to earn that identity in the first place.
