Pretty Boy Smooth wasn’t always trying to be some giant monster in wrestling. In fact, the NWA star says his character came from who he already was.
During his appearance on Jasmin St. Claire’s Krazy Train podcast, Smooth explained that “Pretty Boy” was never some fake gimmick cooked up in a locker room. It started as a college nickname because he always had a fresh haircut, dressed well, and was usually around beautiful women.
When he got into wrestling, he used PB Smooth because he didn’t have some big complicated name in mind. Over time, the whole presentation started to come together. Smooth said Ethan Page played a key role in helping him figure out how to describe the character.
“I had a good relationship with Ethan Paige and me and him were talking about like character stuff and like me trying to explain to him who I am and whatnot and he pretty much was the one that coined the term urban playboy and it just sounded cool.”
That pushed Smooth away from being just another big scary guy. He wanted to lean into personality, charisma, and something that actually fit him.
“Like I think two things can be true. I think I’m very charismatic. I think I can talk on a microphone. I think I have a lot that I bring to the table outside of just being like a big man.”
Smooth knows a lot of fans look at a man his size and expect a monster. He said he can still flip that switch when needed, but he wanted something more unique. Then he admitted not everyone believed in it.
“And a lot of people told me it wouldn’t work. And like the the last thing you want to tell somebody from New York is some like that cuz now I’mma prove you wrong.”
That is the kind of quote that explains the whole character. Pretty Boy Smooth heard the doubt and used it as fuel. Now he is on NWA television, standing out with a presentation that is not the usual seven-foot wrecking machine routine. Whether people bought in right away or not, Smooth is clearly betting on himself.
