Paul Heyman doesn’t have Brock Lesnar’s replacement waiting in the wings. With Lesnar’s wrestling career now over, Heyman admits he has no idea who his next WWE guy will be.
Speaking with The Undertaker on Six Feet Under, Heyman was asked what happens now that Brock is gone and whether he actively looks around WWE for the next wrestler he wants to work with.
Heyman isn’t looking for another Brock. That’s not how he believes these partnerships work. He pointed to Roman Reigns as the perfect example. When Heyman aligned with Roman in 2020, neither man could simply repeat what Heyman had already done with Lesnar. Roman needed something completely different.
“The examples that I continuously gave were — and this is what sold Vince on it — was The Deadman, The American Badass. It has to be that shocking of a metamorphosis, and it has to make sense.”
Heyman’s point was that Undertaker didn’t erase The Deadman when he became the American Badass. He took everything that already existed and moved somewhere new with it.
“Even though that’s a seismic shift in character, you never alienated The Deadman. You incorporated him into an evolved character.”
Heyman believes the same rule applies to himself. The Paul Heyman who worked with Brock couldn’t simply be dropped next to Roman Reigns. The version who worked with Roman couldn’t be copied for CM Punk. Whoever comes next will force him to change again.
“I need to wear a different suit. I need to wear different colors. I need to have a different scheme of things. Because that worked with Brock. But what worked with Brock did not work with Roman. And what worked with Roman did not work with CM Punk.”
For Heyman, that’s the entire job. He considers himself the supporting player. His job isn’t to force someone into an existing Paul Heyman formula. It’s figuring out what that particular wrestler needs and building something around them.
“Everyone’s an individual, and we need to create and act like a marriage — like a professional marriage — that I’m here to, if I understand my role, I’m the supporting player. And I take great pride in that.”
So when Undertaker wanted to know who gets Heyman next, there wasn’t some mystery name he was waiting to reveal. Heyman really doesn’t know.
“So I don’t know the next step because I have to look at the landscape and see, ‘Ooh, let’s invest our time here. Let’s buy into this stock and grow it and watch it rise to the top.’”
Brock is gone, and Heyman isn’t trying to manufacture another one. He’s looking across WWE’s roster and waiting for the person worth investing in next. Whoever that turns out to be, Heyman already knows one thing: what worked with Brock Lesnar isn’t getting recycled.
