Liv Morgan’s SummerSlam win almost never happened. A new backstage report claims WWE had been planning for IYO SKY to walk out of SummerSlam as Women’s World Champion before the company made a late creative pivot and kept the title on Morgan instead.
While speaking during a Self Made Session, Self Made Pro revealed the original plan had been in place internally for quite some time, which would have seen the Genius of the Sky become the new Women’s World Champion.
“IYO SKY was expected internally to win this match over a month ago. And when I spoke to people in the company, the belief had been that the working plan for some time was going to be one where they do a Stephanie Vaquer–Liv Morgan non-title program in the fall.”
Had that happened, Morgan would’ve lost the championship before moving onto a non-title rivalry with Stephanie Vaquer, while IYO SKY kicked off a brand-new reign coming out of WWE’s second-biggest show of the year.
That’s not how things played out. Instead, Morgan survived SKY’s challenge on Night One of SummerSlam and left the stadium with the Women’s World Championship still in her possession, extending a reign that, according to the report, many backstage hadn’t been expecting to continue.
The report doesn’t reveal why WWE abandoned the original direction, only that the expectation for weeks had been an IYO SKY title win before the company ultimately changed course. If accurate, it means one of SummerSlam’s biggest championship matches looked very different behind the scenes than it did once the cameras started rolling.
