WWE just dropped another major match onto tonight’s SmackDown, and this one is loaded. Randy Orton, United States Champion Trick Williams and AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix will throw down in a Triple Threat Money in the Bank qualifier with one man walking out with a ticket to the ladder match.
WWE announced the match on September 18, just hours before SmackDown goes live from Corpus Christi, Texas. The company didn’t waste time dressing it up either — three completely different styles are getting tossed together with a Money in the Bank spot on the line.
“@RandyOrton, U.S. Champion @_trickwilliams and @luchalibreaaa Cruiserweight Champion @ReyFenix battle it out in a #MITB Qualifying Match TONIGHT on #SmackDown!”
Orton enters this one looking to add another Money in the Bank run to a résumé that already includes winning the briefcase back in 2013. Trick Williams, meanwhile, comes into the match carrying the United States Championship after defeating Baron Corbin at Saturday Night’s Main Event, while Fenix brings the AAA Cruiserweight Championship into the mix.
There’s also no shortage of history between some of these guys. Trick Williams has already beaten Rey Fenix in singles competition this year, but adding Randy Orton to the equation turns this into a completely different animal.
The winner joins Bron Breakker and Je’Von Evans in the Men’s Money in the Bank Ladder Match. WWE’s official qualifier tracker currently lists both men as already having secured their spots.
Tonight’s SmackDown lineup has also been changing right up until showtime. Ringside News previously covered Sami Zayn being added to the September 18 SmackDown lineup, while the women’s qualifier was also changed with Alexa Bliss replacing Tatum Paxley against Jade Cargill and Jacy Jayne.
Sami Zayn will walk into the building as Undisputed WWE Champion after taking the title from CM Punk last week, while Cody Rhodes is also scheduled to sit down with Michael Cole following his loss to Randy Orton.
WWE has confirmed for the September 18 episode of SmackDown:
- Undisputed WWE Champion Sami Zayn appears
- Cody Rhodes sits down with Michael Cole
- Men’s Money in the Bank Qualifier: Randy Orton vs. United States Champion Trick Williams vs. AAA Cruiserweight Champion Rey Fenix
- Women’s Money in the Bank Qualifier: Alexa Bliss vs. Jade Cargill vs. Jacy Jayne
SmackDown goes live from the Hilliard Center in Corpus Christi, Texas at 8 PM ET on USA Network. With WWE still adding matches hours before bell time, this card went from pretty straightforward to having two Money in the Bank spots up for grabs and three champions involved in the chaos.
