Andy “The Butcher” Williams apparently had one hilariously bizarre wrestling idea that never made it to AEW television — and Matt Hardy still remembers it years later.
While reflecting on Williams following his death on his podcast, Hardy revealed that he had been going back through old text messages between the two. Among those conversations was an unused pitch Williams came up with while The Blade was sidelined with an injury.
Instead of simply waiting for his regular tag team partner to return, Williams had another idea. He wanted The Butcher to join forces with Hardy’s obnoxious “Big Money Matt” character and form a team with one very specific purpose — stealing people’s lunch money. Hardy recalled the entire pitch. The idea never became an on-screen AEW act, but Hardy clearly loved how ridiculous it was.
“There was one point when Blade was out hurt and he like said, ‘Hey, I have this idea. If he’s going to be out for a few weeks, what if, you know, myself, The Butcher and Big Money Matt, we do a tag team called Lunch Money and we just attack people backstage, we rob them, we bully them for lunch money.’ He said, ‘I think Big Money Matt would get off on that.’”
“Very funny idea. Very, very funny idea.”
The story came as Hardy looked back through his phone and remembered just how much personality Williams had away from the ring. Hardy said he still had countless messages from The Butcher saved, ranging from goofy wrestling ideas like “Lunch Money” to much deeper conversations about wrestling psychology and connecting with fans.
It’s one of those wrestling ideas that sounds completely insane on paper but probably would have fit Big Money Matt perfectly. Unfortunately, fans never got to see The Butcher and Matt Hardy shaking people down backstage for lunch money, but the pitch gives another glimpse at Williams’ sense of humor and the creativity he brought to wrestling away from the cameras.
