Matt Cardona may be back in WWE, but he doesn’t believe fans have seen the version of him that made his post-WWE career take off. In fact, he says it’s only a matter of time before that side of him finally shows up.
While speaking on the Insight podcast, Cardona was asked whether he sees himself turning heel again in WWE.. Cardona admitted the character fans are seeing today isn’t the one that helped transform his career after leaving WWE. Instead, he believes the company still hasn’t fully unleashed the ruthless version of himself that became one of the independent scene’s biggest stars.
“Not maybe, definitely, because I’ve said, and I said it on TV too, like ‘I left and I reinvented myself, blah blah blah,’ but who you see right now is not who I was on the indies like the heel Ultimate Opportunist, no redeeming qualities, Matt Cardona. That’s what I feel WWE needs to see from me.”
Exactly when that change happens is still anyone’s guess, but Cardona says he’s not worried about forcing it. As far as he’s concerned, it’s WWE’s job to find the right moment—and his job to be ready when it comes.
“I’m not exactly sure how we’re gonna get there but I’m always ready. And I’m in the game. So if the opportunity presents itself, I will capitalize.”
For now, Cardona has his sights set on becoming a Grand Slam Champion in WWE, but it sounds like he expects that chase to eventually come with a very different attitude. If he gets his way, the smiling comeback story won’t be around forever—the “Ultimate Opportunist” is waiting in the wings.
