Sami Zayn’s WWE Title win was not just a shock to fans — apparently, plenty of people inside WWE were left playing catch-up too.
According to WrestleVotes Radio on Fightful Select, Zayn’s Undisputed WWE Championship win at Night of Champions was kept on a strict “need-to-know” basis across multiple departments. That means while Sami was walking out of Riyadh as champion, not everyone behind the scenes had been looped in beforehand.
The secrecy was so tight that, as of July 1, WWE’s marketing department had not received instructions to update SummerSlam 2026 promotional concepts with Sami as the reigning Undisputed WWE Champion.
That is a pretty big deal, because SummerSlam marketing is not something WWE usually throws together at the last second. If the champion changes and the people building those promotional materials do not know in advance, things can get messy fast.
One WWE employee called the situation “worrisome,” because if major creative moves are kept that locked down going forward, departments outside the inner circle could have a harder time preparing.
The wild part is that Sami is said to be universally loved backstage, so the reaction to him winning was still overwhelmingly positive. WrestleVotes previously said people across WWE had wanted this for a long time, from talent to weekly travel staff and even “the parking guys.”
Still, this update makes Sami’s win feel even more dramatic. WWE got the huge feel-good moment, but behind the curtain, it sounds like only a small group knew it was coming.
Do you think WWE was smart to keep Sami Zayn’s title win this secret, or could that kind of secrecy hurt planning behind the scenes? Drop your thoughts in the comments and let us know.
