Kevin Owens isn’t easing back into WWE, and he doesn’t care what his doctors think about it.
After making his shocking return at SummerSlam, Owens made it clear on the SummerSlam Sunday post-show that nobody should expect him to wrestle a safer style. Even after neck surgery and more than a year on the sidelines, he’s planning to go all-out every time he steps into the ring.
Owens returned in one of the biggest surprises of SummerSlam after Nick Aldis first inserted GUNTHER into the No. 1 Contender’s Match with Sami Zayn and Finn Bálor before adding one more participant. When Owens’ music hit, the crowd inside U.S. Bank Stadium erupted.
The former Universal Champion admitted he couldn’t fully appreciate the reaction at first because of how overwhelming the moment was. Owens said everything changed once he got inside the ring.
“It’s hard when you’re in that moment to even hear the reaction because the music’s playing, you’re emotional, and the way the sound travels in stadiums is different than arenas.”
“Once I got in the ring, that’s kind of where the noise hits you… it was incredible.”
The experience reminded him of something “Stone Cold” Steve Austin told him after their WrestleMania 38 match. At the time, Owens thought Austin was crazy for saying he couldn’t hear the crowd. Now, he finally understands exactly what Austin meant. As emotional as the return was, Owens quickly made one thing crystal clear. He’s not coming back to play it safe.
“I’m not back to half-ass this stuff.”
Owens revealed that his surgeon has warned him to be careful, but he has no intention of changing the way he wrestles, even if it shortens the rest of his career.
“I’ve been told by my surgeon to be careful. I’m not going to be careful. If it ends in two years, it ends in two years. You are never getting less than everything I have.”
Owens also said there wasn’t a better group of opponents he could have shared his return with. He praised GUNTHER as possibly the best wrestler in the world, called Finn Bálor a brother outside the ring and pointed to his decades-long bond with Sami Zayn.
SummerSlam marked Kevin Owens’ first match since March 2025, but if his comments are any indication, fans shouldn’t expect a cautious version of KO. Doctor’s orders or not, he’s planning to wrestle the only way he knows how.
