Kevin Nash has a pretty simple message for wrestlers who complain about having to meet fans: remember who paid your bills.
While speaking on Kliq This about his recent WrestleCon appearance, Nash unloaded on wrestlers who treat conventions and autograph signings like an inconvenience, arguing that the people standing in those lines are the same people who made their careers possible in the first place. And he didn’t exactly soften the message.
“There’s nothing like if you b***** about going someplace and meeting the people that basically paid your bills for 30 years. You’re such a f****** douchebag.”
Nash had just spent WrestleCon experiencing the exact opposite. For him, the best thing wasn’t simply catching up with people from the wrestling business. It was getting face-to-face time with fans who bought the merchandise, watched him wrestle and continued supporting him decades after the height of his career. That’s why Nash doesn’t buy the excuse that a long autograph line means wrestlers need to rush people through.
“They bought your book. They drove to that location. They’re there to get it signed and to meet you. And what they want is they want that—even if they would rather have two minutes of your time—that other person’s not going to leave. They’re going to wait because you’re going to give them the exact same time. So, just wait. Just deal with the one and then you deal with the other person.”
Nash said he’ll ask fans how their names are spelled before personalizing an autograph and naturally spend a little longer talking whenever a conversation develops. The important part is making sure nobody feels like they’re simply being pushed through an assembly line.
“You’ve got to make every one of those people feel the same. Like it’s the experience should be the same for everyone… I look at my line and I see nWo shirts, I see Kevin Nash figures… you know that they’re there to see you. So it’s just like… I want each person’s experience…”
That’s also why seeing wrestlers act annoyed about doing signings bothers him so much. Those nWo shirts and Kevin Nash figures aren’t just something sitting in a convention line. To Nash, they’re reminders of who spent money on him throughout his career and helped give him the life he has today. So when wrestlers can’t give some of that appreciation back, Nash has very little sympathy.
Kevin Nash: “It’s a d*** move. It really is, man. It’s just like here’s this—this is what’s made your life so f******… and you can’t show a little love back. It’s like, man, f*** you.”
Thirty years of support. A drive to the convention. Money spent just for a few minutes and an autograph. Kevin Nash figures the least a wrestler can do is make those few minutes count.
