Kevin Knight isn’t treating his championship success like some rare breakthrough. The AEW star wants Black wrestlers holding major titles to become a normal part of the business—not an exception that catches everyone by surprise.
During an interview with Unlikely at AEW All In 2026, Knight was shown a photograph of Black wrestlers posing with their championships following AEW Redemption. Knight immediately called the image “Black excellence” before explaining why the moment meant so much to him. For Knight, the photograph represented more than individual success. It showed the kind of wrestling industry he wanted to help create when he decided to step inside the ring.
“This right here is Black excellence. This right here is exactly why I started wrestling—to make sure that this is the standard moving forward, that Black people being champions and Black people being taken seriously in this business is not an anomaly.”
Knight then made it clear that Black wrestlers shouldn’t be viewed as interchangeable. He pointed to the different backgrounds, appearances and personalities they bring to wrestling while arguing that seeing a Black world champion should never feel unusual.
“We’re all talented. We come in different shapes, colors, flavors, you know what I mean, different backgrounds. It’s not surprising to see a Black world champion in a wrestling promotion. So, this is the standard. This is why we got into this.”
Knight’s message was simple: Black wrestlers belong at the top of the card, and their championship success should be treated as part of wrestling’s normal landscape. As his own rise in AEW continues, Knight clearly wants his run to help make that standard impossible to ignore.
