Joseph Sawyer’s knee injury is proving to be more serious than he initially hoped. Just days after saying he thought everything would be “okay for now,” the newly signed TNA star has confirmed he’ll be missing this weekend’s independent wrestling appearances while he continues to recover.

Sawyer suffered the injury during GCW Score while defending the GCW World Championship. After taking a cannonball in the corner against John Jeffrey, he immediately grabbed his knee and rolled to the floor, leading to concerns that he could be sidelined for an extended period. He later tried to calm those fears by posting that he believed his knee would be okay.

That optimism has now been tempered. On October 1, Sawyer took to Twitter to let fans know he won’t be wrestling this weekend as he continues recovering from the injury.

“Didn’t think I needed to do this, but yes I am still recovering from Saturday so I will not be on any shows this weekend. I apologize to anyone looking forward to seeing me live and I will find a way to make it up to you. Thank you.”

While Sawyer didn’t provide any specifics about the injury itself, the update confirms he’s not ready to return to the ring just yet. He also didn’t mention how long he expects to be out beyond this weekend.

The timing is especially unfortunate given everything that’s happened over the past couple of weeks. Sawyer recently debuted in TNA alongside Samuel Shaw as one-half of Syx, attacking The Hardys before TNA officially announced both men had signed with the company. He’s also in the middle of a run as GCW World Champion after capturing the title at Homecoming Night One.

For now, though, Sawyer’s focus appears to be getting healthy instead of rushing back into the ring. While he’s only ruled himself out for this weekend’s independent dates, fans will now be waiting to see when the GCW World Champion is cleared to resume defending his title—and whether the injury impacts his early momentum in TNA.
