Joseph Sawyer’s big week took a painful turn at GCW Score, but his latest message offers some hope. The newly signed TNA star, formerly known as Joe Gacy in WWE, appeared to hurt his knee during a GCW Championship defense before telling fans on Twitter that he thinks it will be okay for now.
The scare happened during Sawyer’s open challenge against John Jeffrey. After taking a cannonball in the corner, Sawyer immediately rolled out of the ring and began limping, prompting the referee to check on him.
Sawyer walked around ringside as the official monitored him, with Jeffrey also walking past him during the interruption. The champion then grabbed a microphone and said he might be done for months before getting in a fan’s face and eventually leaving.
That raised questions about what had happened, but Sawyer’s subsequent social media post sounded more optimistic. Posting through his Joe Gacy account, he addressed his knee without giving a diagnosis or confirming whether he would miss any dates.
“Update.
Not sure but I think the knee will be okay for now.”
The match against Jeffrey was already Sawyer’s second title defense of the night. He had defended the GCW Championship against Jazzy Yang moments before accepting another challenger, making the apparent injury an abrupt turn in a busy evening.
Sawyer has been carrying the championship since winning the GCW World Title at Homecoming Night One. He defeated Atticus Cogar with Sister Abigail to capture the belt, adding championship success to his run after WWE.
The timing of this scare is especially rough because Sawyer had just made a major move on national television. On September 24, he and Samuel Shaw—formerly Dexter Lumis—arrived in TNA as the mystery attackers targeting the roster, jumping The Hardys before revealing themselves as “Syx.”
TNA then announced that both Sawyer and Shaw had officially signed with the company. That gave their attack on Matt and Jeff Hardy immediate consequences, with the duo positioned to continue the story beyond their first appearance.
Sawyer went from warning that he could be out for months to saying his knee might be okay—all on the same night. His tweet is an encouraging change in tone, but it leaves the biggest question unanswered: whether this scare will cost him any ring time just as his TNA run gets started.
