Jonathan Coachman heard Will Ospreay’s shot at The Rock ahead of AEW All In, and he thinks Ospreay picked the wrong guy to mess with. The former WWE personality believes Ospreay may already regret bragging that he’s about to do something The Rock never did.
Ospreay got people talking during an appearance on ITV’s Good Morning Britain when comedian Jack Whitehall joked that they probably shouldn’t mention The Rock because he works for “the other side.” That was all Ospreay needed.
“Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s never main evented Wembley Stadium.”
Ospreay is set to challenge Kenny Omega for the AEW World Championship in the main event of All In at Wembley Stadium this weekend, so he’ll soon have that particular accomplishment on his résumé. Coachman saw the comment and took to Twitter to explain why he thinks Ospreay probably wishes he could have that one back.
“You know that old adage, ‘You don’t bring a knife to a gun fight?’ I get it. Promoting, you’re in the main event at Wembley Stadium. I get you’re on all the TV shows. I like Will Ospreay and his ‘character.’ But I’m quite certain that this man today, yesterday, and the day he said it is regretting saying The Rock has never main evented Wembley Stadium.”
Coachman’s argument was pretty simple: The Rock didn’t fail to main event Wembley. WWE simply wasn’t running major stadium shows there during his time on top.
“Because The Rock has main evented just about every other building in the world. The only reason he hasn’t main evented Wembley is because they haven’t done a show there. You gotta know who you’re throwing that at.”
Coachman admitted that if Ospreay’s goal was simply to get people talking ahead of All In, then it worked. But he also turned the whole thing into criticism of AEW and Tony Khan, arguing that Ospreay shouldn’t need to take shots like this just to generate attention for the company’s biggest show. Coachman believes AEW has plenty of talented wrestlers but needs stronger creative around them
“If you wanted to get attention, Will Ospreay, well done. But to say The Rock has never main evented Wembley… we can talk about the other side. Tony Khan, get some people around you that know what they are doing.
You have a ton of good talent. You have a ton of talented people, but you need writers, and you need some people to cut promos that can have storylines that work. Then you wouldn’t have to have your main eventer going on talk shows and getting attention like this.”
He did give AEW some credit before wrapping things up, acknowledging that drawing around 40,000 people for a wrestling show is nothing to dismiss.
“Oh, by the way, 40,000 for any wrestling show in the world is good. All In, this weekend.”
Ospreay’s original line was only a few words, but it certainly accomplished one thing: people noticed. Coachman just thinks that when the name on the other end is The Rock, Ospreay should probably know exactly who he’s throwing that shot at.
