John Cena is opening up about the exact moment he realized it was time to walk away from WWE competition for good.
During an appearance on the Sports Illustrated Takedown podcast, Cena explained that modern WWE talent are simply operating at a level physically faster than what he can keep up with anymore. Instead of ignoring the warning signs, he made the decision to step away before damaging the legacy he built over two decades.
Cena explained that he closely tracks his physical performance through strength and athletic testing, including things like vertical jump measurements, recovery, training output, hydration, and overall conditioning. Eventually, the numbers stopped matching the effort he was putting in. After realizing the decline wasn’t temporary, Cena admitted he had to face reality about where he stood physically compared to WWE’s current generation.
“This new crop of extra talented superstars come up that are performing at a speed like the game just looks too fast for me… because it is. You’re right. I could change my style, but at the risk of ruining that energy that WWE invested in me. And that’s tough because from an ego standpoint, you got to step away from the audience. I love the audience. It’s great. But man, that’s not respectful to the fans and it’s not respectful to the company. It’s also not respectful to new talent trying to get an opportunity. Step aside. Let the young superstars come up.”
Cena also stressed that his retirement is real and that fans should not expect surprise comeback matches later down the line. While he still plans to stay involved with WWE creatively, he insists his in-ring career is finished.
The WWE icon’s comments come after his emotional retirement run became one of the company’s biggest stories, with Cena continuing to receive major reactions from crowds despite no longer wrestling full-time.
