John Cena just killed off one of the biggest theories hanging over his 2025 heel turn — and he did it with one sentence. The Rock never had his soul.
Speaking at Fan Expo, Cena addressed the idea that he somehow “sold his soul” to The Rock when he turned on Cody Rhodes at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025. Cena says fans took the whole soul-selling angle a lot more literally than he ever did.
“So everybody says I sold my soul. A few people say I sold my soul to the Rock just because Cody and the Rock were talking about soul selling and I happened to get in there.”
That whole mess started with The Rock trying to get Cody Rhodes to hand himself over to The Final Boss. Cody refused, told Rock exactly where he could stick the offer, and then Cena walked into the picture and turned everything upside down.
Cena won the Elimination Chamber match, hugged Cody, and then suddenly dropped him before joining Rock and Travis Scott in the beatdown. Naturally, fans figured Cena had taken the deal Cody rejected.Cena says nope.
“Does that mean Travis Scott sold his soul as well? I don’t know. Is there a soul for sale thing? No.”
Cena then stripped the whole thing down to what he says was the real motivation. He wasn’t selling his soul to anybody — he wanted another world championship.
“No. I just wanted to win a championship. The Rock doesn’t have my soul. He doesn’t. I don’t think he ever got Cody’s.”
That turn changed the entire direction of Cena’s final WWE run and sent him straight toward Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41. It also became one of the most talked-about moves of Cena’s career, especially after WWE later moved away from the heel direction and Cena and Triple H addressed why the run didn’t land the way they wanted. Still, Cena wants the record straight on one thing. There was no deal with The Rock that involved giving up his soul, and apparently there was never even a conversation like that.
“I just want to make things clear. We did not have a soul deal. DJ And I, we got a. We got a good relationship. I don’t need to. I don’t need to also give him my soul.”
So there you go. Cena may have stabbed Cody Rhodes in the back, stood beside The Rock and helped create one of the craziest turns WWE had done in years, but he says there was no soul transaction hiding behind any of it. The Rock got Cena on his side, but apparently that was as far as the deal went. Cena says his soul never belonged to The Final Boss — he just wanted the championship.
