John Cena finally gave fans a real update on the John Cena Classic—and the event is still very much alive.
While speaking with Extra at San Diego Comic-Con, Cena confirmed WWE is actively working on the event and plans to hold it toward the end of 2026.
The 17-time World Champion first announced the John Cena Classic at Backlash on May 10. The concept will feature an in-ring competition where fans help vote to crown the first John Cena Classic Champion.Cena admitted he could not reveal the full plan yet, but made it clear the project is moving forward.
“What I can tell you is that we’re working towards it, and I cannot tell you how excited I am about the event and what it stands for. I want to do something great for WWE and for the fans toward the end of the calendar year.”
Cena said he would love to give away more details, but he is keeping WWE’s plans under wraps for now.
“Man, I wish I could give you spoilers, but I’ve got to be loyal to my company. What I can tell you is we’re working on it, and I’m going to give you my absolute best.”
He also made it clear that putting his name on the event comes with serious expectations.
“If an event is going to wear my name, especially in the WWE realm, I’m always giving my best to WWE. The Classic will be no less.”
WWE has not announced the exact date, location or format for the John Cena Classic, but Cena’s update confirms fans should expect the event before 2026 is over. Cena may be keeping the big details secret, but he is already promising that the John Cena Classic will get everything he has.
