John Cena is putting his name behind the John Cena Classic, and he’s already admitting there’s a chance the whole thing could fall flat.
While speaking to WrestleRant, Cena brought up the event while talking about failure, criticism and the advice he gives younger WWE talent. After accepting that some people viewed parts of his final run as failures, Cena said he doesn’t want to preach about taking risks unless he’s willing to do the same thing himself.
That’s exactly how he views the John Cena Classic. Cena is already retired, his career is secure, and he doesn’t need another win attached to his name — but he still wants to take the chance.
“Even with the John Cena Classic, I’m still swinging big. Like, I’m in the clubhouse, dude. I’m retired. I made it. But I want to put my name on an event that hopefully is a way to to bring people together and and I’m really excited about it and it also might fail.”
Cena wasn’t joking about the possibility either. His point was that failure is part of taking a real swing, and he wants younger talent to see that he’s willing to live by the same advice he gives them.
“So I’m I don’t I’m I’m again I’m I’m trying to I’m trying to walk the talk. I tell the the young talent a lot to to embrace bold chances and then just learn from the failures. So I I I got to try to walk that talk, boss.”
The John Cena Classic came up again later when Cena was discussing opportunity and frustration. He said the entire idea is rooted in giving people another chance to get out there and show what they can do.
“I guess I guess that’s also the the origin story for the opportunistic um nature of the John Cena Classic. I just want to get folks out there to have an ability to do their thing the best they can do it.”
Cena didn’t reveal more details about how the John Cena Classic will play out, but he made the mindset behind it crystal clear. He wants to create an opportunity, attach his name to it, and accept whatever comes next.
That’s the interesting part here. Cena could retire, protect the brand and never take another risk again. Instead, he’s openly telling everyone the John Cena Classic could bomb — and he’s still pressing forward because playing it safe would completely contradict everything he’s telling the next generation.
