John Cena finally explained why he spent years wrestling in jorts, and turns out it wasn’t just a fashion choice. It was damage control.
While appearing on Good Morning America, Cena was asked what happened to all those famous jean shorts he wore during his WWE run. Instead of giving some deep branding answer, Cena kept it brutally practical — everything else kept ripping.
“So, not as many jorts as you would think. The reason I wore jorts is very practical, because I tried every other pair of pants and shorts and the crotch would blow open. You don’t want a mistake like that in the ring. You don’t want a wardrobe malfunction like that in the ring.”
Cena said he tried other looks before landing on denim, including cargo shorts and even pants, but none of them held up once he started wrestling in them. The problem was always the same — the stitching just could not survive WWE.
“Yeah, that came out of—because jorts are looser. No, but denim is strong, and the stitching on denim is strong. I used to wear cargo shorts—bad idea. I used to wear like a pantsuit like this—bad idea.”
That is how one of the most recognizable looks in wrestling history was born. Not because Cena thought jorts would become iconic, but because they were the only thing strong enough to avoid a disaster on live TV.
“Denim is the fabric that is built for being in the world of WWE. Just—the crotch would blow open. Yes, that’s exactly it. Meme it, go ahead. You can meme it, that’s fine. Add it to the meme stream—that’s fine.”
So, the jorts were not about style points. They were about making sure Cena could throw hands, hit Attitude Adjustments and not accidentally give the crowd a whole different kind of show. Bottom line, John Cena’s most famous ring gear came down to one simple thing: denim did not betray him.
