AEW keeps putting on acclaimed pay-per-views. The roster is stacked, the matches keep delivering and Jim Ross doesn’t think any of that is the problem. If anything, JR believes AEW is missing just one thing—and he thinks finding it could completely change the company’s future.
Speaking on Grilling JR after AEW Redemption, Ross praised the promotion for continuing to raise the bar every time it puts on a pay-per-view, saying the latest event was another example of AEW exceeding expectations.
“I thought, as usual, it was an outstanding pay-per-view from AEW. They never cease to amaze me. They keep out-delivering the last one, and I think that’s one way to describe this past event. They just keep doing it. They keep out-delivering it.”
That’s why Ross doesn’t believe AEW’s biggest challenge has anything to do with the quality of its shows. He argued there are still plenty of wrestling fans who haven’t truly discovered AEW yet, despite what he considers one of the strongest rosters in the business today.
“I just think there’s a lot of people that haven’t discovered AEW. Believe it or not, I believe there are a lot of people who haven’t discovered AEW that are wrestling fans. I would encourage them to tune in to the TV shows, check them out, see if you like it or not.”
Ross then pointed to the company’s depth, saying anyone looking at the roster objectively should be impressed by the amount of talent AEW has assembled.
“If you look at their roster… you’ve got to be, if you’re objective, half-ass impressed that they have quite the talented roster.”
For JR, though, talent alone isn’t always enough. He believes every wrestling company eventually needs one performer who catches lightning in a bottle—the kind of star that becomes impossible to ignore and convinces people they have to watch.
“I’m a big believer that AEW is continuing to grow. They just need a break. They need somebody on the roster to get hotter than hell. And that’s not impossible to pull off, I can tell you.”
Ross never named who that wrestler could be, but he made one thing clear. In his eyes, AEW doesn’t need to reinvent itself. It just needs one person to catch fire.
