Janel Grant says the financial situation inside her family got so bad that she didn’t even realize they were broke until a debit card was declined while she and her father were trying to buy milk and bread. Years before Vince McMahon, WWE, lawsuits or national headlines, Grant says her world was already unraveling behind closed doors.
During a conversation with POST Wrestling, Grant opened up about the period when both of her parents were dealing with serious health problems. Her father had pulmonary fibrosis and later showed signs of dementia, while her mother suffered multiple heart attacks. Grant, an only child, was trying to juggle law school and caregiving while the family’s finances quietly collapsed.
Grant says nobody sat her down and told her how bad things had gotten. She found out the hard way in 2009 when she and her father went to a supermarket and tried to pay for a few basic groceries.
“You can’t reverse engineer the financial decisions that you don’t know about. I know a lot of things that I didn’t know about until the day that Dad and I went to the supermarket in 2009… And we tried to buy—it’s pitiful—like milk and bread from the food emporium, and the card got declined… We don’t have money. We’re basically broke. How did this happen? I was so sheltered. I didn’t know it.”
That moment wasn’t some temporary cash crunch. Grant says it was when she finally realized the financial foundation underneath her family had basically disappeared without her knowing.
The problems only piled up from there. Grant’s mother died in 2014, and her father died in 2017. She has said that after losing both parents, she felt “directionless” and spent time volunteering at a hospital before eventually meeting Vince McMahon in 2019.
That meeting would completely change the course of her life. Grant later went to work for WWE, and her relationship with McMahon eventually became the center of the explosive lawsuit accusing the former WWE Chairman of sexual assault, coercion and sex trafficking. McMahon has denied Grant’s allegations and has maintained that their relationship was consensual. The public court fight has since moved behind closed doors. Grant, McMahon and WWE agreed to take the dispute into private arbitration, and the federal case was formally closed in July 2026.
Grant’s story is now tied to one of the biggest scandals WWE has ever faced, but her latest comments show just how rough things were long before wrestling entered the equation. Before the corporate job, the McMahon connection and the courtroom war, Grant says there was a grocery-store checkout where she suddenly learned her family didn’t even have enough money for the basics.
