Janel Grant Says “Everything From My Bones to My Bank Account Is Still Broken”

Janel Grant says surviving the darkest stretch of her life didn’t magically fix everything. She’s still injured, still dealing with financial problems and still carrying years of damage — but after nearly losing her life, Grant says she’s finally looking at what she still has instead of only what she lost.

Grant delivered the emotional admission while accepting the 2026 Advocacy in Action Award from the Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence. Shortly after Ringside News published footage from her September 11 speech, Grant posted the longer version on Instagram and revealed a much bigger story behind her appearance.

Grant said the last several years blew apart virtually every area of her life.

“What I’ve survived is one, two, three, four years of across-the-board life wreck, like physical health, mental health, my, oh goodness, my support system, my safety, my security, my place in the world, just stability and everything gone, finances gone.”

Things got even worse around six weeks before the event when Grant says she tripped inside her home, suffered a concussion, broken ribs and facial injuries and then spent days in a blackout. But Grant said that nightmare ultimately showed her something she didn’t realize before — she wasn’t alone.

“The power of my worst fear realized turned out to be proof that I’m actually in a new beginning. It took a serious accident and nearly losing my life to realize finally that me and my cat were not alone.”

Grant said people she had only recently connected with realized something was wrong, made calls and eventually got her to a hospital. That support completely changed how she now looks at her situation. Grant didn’t pretend everything suddenly became perfect. Quite the opposite.

“There’s a power in acknowledging multiple truths that exist in any given moment.”

Then she summed up exactly where she is right now with one brutal line.

“Everything from my bones to my bank account is still broken. Any problem I had yesterday is still going to be there tomorrow. But I’m standing in gratitude.”

That’s a pretty raw place to be. Grant says she’s still physically recovering. She says her finances are still wrecked. The problems that existed before the accident haven’t disappeared. But she says something inside her changed anyway.

“And it feels like this joyous hard-won defiant against the odds, honest celebration of life and of the power of the Alliance. Because I’m still here. I’m still breathing.”

Grant’s appearance came weeks after her federal lawsuit against Vince McMahon and WWE was dismissed so the dispute could continue through private arbitration. That ended the public federal courtroom fight, but it did not mean Grant withdrew her allegations or that McMahon or WWE admitted wrongdoing.

Grant was also being honored for advocacy work that began while the lawsuit was still active. The Connecticut Alliance to End Sexual Violence had previously recognized Grant for pushing NDA reform, with Grant saying months earlier that the organization’s services had “saved mine” while talking about lives saved through survivor support.

Now those words carry a hell of a lot more weight. Grant says her bones are still broken. Her bank account is still broken. The legal fight hasn’t magically vanished either. But after an accident she says nearly killed her, she’s looking at the fact that she’s still standing as proof that her life has finally started moving in a different direction.

Grant closed the speech with a line that probably says more about where her head is now than anything else.

“It’s powerful to realize I’ve stopped counting the dates and I’m making the days count. Thank you so much.”
