MJF’s knee injury had fans guessing after AEW Dynamite, and now there is a clearer answer on how it happened.
The AEW World Champion suffered a hyperextended knee during his June 3 match against RUSH. The injury was real, and it was enough to force MJF out of his Beyond Wrestling booking in Cranston, Rhode Island, where he was scheduled to face Bobby Orlando.
A lot of fans pointed to the Tombstone spot on the barricade as the likely moment MJF got hurt. That spot looked rough, but that was not where the injury happened.
Fightful Select noted that MJF’s hyperextended knee came from a RUSH knee in the corner. It was described as a freak accident, and there is no heat on RUSH over what happened. MJF’s knee is swollen and causing him pain, but he is still expected to continue appearing on AEW programming while the company monitors the injury.
Dave Meltzer also reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that MJF’s Forbidden Door plans are not in jeopardy.
“MJF suffered a hyperextended knee in his match with Rush on the 6/3 Dynamite show. The knee is swollen and in pain but whatever is planned for the PPV (and it’s not clear at this point what that is) is not in jeopardy; essentially, the line was he is 1 million percent doing what is scheduled for San Jose.”
MJF retained the AEW World Championship against RUSH in a brutal No Countout Match after locking in a crossface and making RUSH pass out. He walked out still champion, but not without damage.
For now, the important part is how it happened. MJF’s knee injury did not come from the barricade spot fans were talking about. It happened on the RUSH knee in the corner, and AEW is still moving forward with him while keeping an eye on the situation.
