Grayson Waller says the words coming out of his mouth on WWE NXT belong to him. The NXT Champion claims nobody is writing his recent verbal attacks for him—and he means everything he says about the locker room.
During his appearance on Busted Open After Dark, Waller explained why he enjoys getting under the skin of his opponents. He said insulting people isn’t just entertaining for him—it is part of the mental warfare he uses to throw them off their game.
“There’s a reason I got into this business, and one of them is that I get paid to say the most horrible things possible. I have no problem doing that. It’s fun, but it’s also smart. I’m intelligent enough to know the exact thing I can say to you to get you so angry that you’ll be off your game.”
Waller used Cruz Montana as an example, arguing that Montana became distracted by the emotion surrounding their NXT Championship match. Waller believes that distraction allowed him to capitalize and leave with the title.
“That’s what I do. I’m so good at mental warfare, and there is no one in this entire company—and I genuinely think this entire industry—who is as good at mental warfare. None of these guys are on their A-game because I know what to say. I know the one thing that’s really going to get under your skin, the one thing that’s going to get you so frustrated that you make a mistake.”
Waller said the approach works because he genuinely enjoys it. He claimed the audience and his opponents can tell that he isn’t simply reciting words handed to him backstage.
“I’m going to keep doing it because it’s fun. I enjoy it. That’s the beautiful thing. It’s not just something that’s working. It’s something that I enjoy doing. You can feel it in the crowd. When I mean it from my heart—when I say these horrible things—the crowd can feel it. The guys can feel it. This ain’t a lie. No one is writing stuff for me. I’m out here saying what I think.”
Bully Ray then directly asked whether Waller was claiming that every statement he has made since returning to NXT came from him, without someone else writing or approving the words. Waller doubled down and said his promos work because they reflect his real opinions.
“I meant everything I’ve said from day one. Everything I’ve said and everyone I’ve said it about, I mean it. That’s why this is working, because people can feel it. You watch people talk on the microphone and you can tell when they don’t feel it. They’re just saying what they think they have to say or what someone else wants them to say.”
Waller said believability comes from making things real. He then repeated his attacks on Cruz Montana, Tony D’Angelo and the rest of the NXT men’s division.
“I think the best thing about this business is believability, and the easiest way to do believability is to make it real. Everything I say is real. I mean everything I say. I hate Cruz Montana. I hate Tony D. I think the men’s division is soft. I think they’re lazy. I think all these athletes are just here because they love to put ‘WWE Superstar’ in their bio. They don’t care about this business.”
Waller claimed his anger comes from watching other people receive television time while he was forced to sit at home. Instead of complaining publicly, he said he took action and forced WWE to pay attention.
“I love this business. I live this business, and it’s disrespectful for these guys to be on TV when I’m not. Do you know how hard it was, Bully, to sit at home and watch Raw, SmackDown, NXT, Evolve and LFG and see a bunch of idiots on the screen—and I’m not—when I’m the one who loves this more than anyone? I’m the most talented guy.”
“Instead of complaining on Twitter like most guys did, I’ve gone out and done something about it. I think people are responding, good or bad, because it’s real.”
Waller is betting that honesty—even when it makes him hated—will keep people watching. Now that he has the NXT Championship and a live microphone, he has no plans to soften what he says or who he targets.
