Darby Allin got thrown off a steel cage and crashed through a pile of tables on AEW Dynamite, but former WWE referee Jimmy Korderas says there’s one big problem — nobody seems to give a damn anymore.
During the November 4 episode of AEW Dynamite: Blood & Guts, Wardlow launched Allin off the top of the cage after Kyle gave the order to “do it.” Allin went flying through several tables to close the show, but Korderas wasn’t impressed with what he heard from the crowd. On November 6, Korderas took to Twitter and replayed the footage, asking viewers to pay attention to the audience’s reaction.
“Okay, I want you to watch and hear this if you can. Here we go. Did you hear that? I certainly didn’t.”
Korderas then ripped into Allin for doing so many dangerous stunts that even getting thrown off a cage doesn’t seem special anymore. According to the former WWE referee, Allin has made these insane bumps so routine that people simply expect them.
“The fact is Darby Allen has committed so many of these crazy stunts that he has completely desensitized his audience to what he does now. He doesn’t get a desire, he doesn’t get the holy reaction anymore. He gets the, oh, he went through another table. That’s exactly what happened. The crowd just doesn’t care anymore because they expect it from him.”
Korderas argued that the more Allin puts himself through these dangerous spots, the less they mean. He compared it to wrestlers using piledrivers and table spots so frequently that audiences eventually stop reacting.
“When you expect something like that, then it doesn’t mean anything. It’s like anything else you do. When you do the pile driver too many times, when you. When you go through tables too many times, when you do anything like that too many times. People don’t care anymore because they’ve seen it too often and they’ve seen it too much from Darby Allen. He needs to change it up.”
And Korderas wasn’t finished. He took aim at AEW’s original roster, claiming several wrestlers have been doing the same thing for seven years without changing their characters or presentation. He even suggested that the lack of evolution could be contributing to AEW’s attendance problems.
“That’s the problem with a lot of wrestlers in AEW since day one. The guys that have been there since day one, the OG AEW guys, nothing has changed from their original presentation. From day one to seven years later, they have not evolved one bit. And that is hurting them immensely. And that could be one of the reasons why they are hurting in live attendance. Except for pay per views, of course. But as far as Darby Allen goes, that is why I believe this is hurting him.”
Korderas also criticized AEW for having Allin’s cage fall overshadow the actual finish of the Blood & Guts match. His argument is simple: Allin doesn’t need to take bigger risks. He needs to do something different.
Allin has spent years building a reputation for taking some of the nastiest bumps in wrestling, but Korderas believes the shock factor is gone. If getting launched off a cage through tables isn’t enough to get a massive reaction, doing it again probably won’t change anything.
