WWE headquarters had a wild scene over the weekend after a massive American flag was ripped from the building. The flag ended up hitting a power line, catching fire, and causing thousands of power outages in the Stamford area.
The incident happened Saturday night at WWE’s headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. Stamford Deputy Fire Chief Matt Palmer confirmed that the large flag was torn off the roof of the WWE building at 8:44 p.m. and got lodged on high-voltage wires near the Metro North train tracks.
The wires were located near the intersection of Atlantic and Manhattan streets, right by the Stamford Train Station. Once the flag hit the wires, it caught fire and created a situation the fire department could only monitor. Palmer said there was not much firefighters could do directly because of where the flag landed. The department stayed on scene, watched the situation, and notified the power companies.

The impact was felt well beyond the WWE building. According to Eversource, around 5,000 customers in Stamford lost power immediately. The company was able to restore power to about 3,000 customers within 20 minutes.
By around 6 p.m. Sunday, Eversource still listed more than 4,000 outages in Greenwich and 2,700 in Stamford. By Monday morning, those outages had been resolved.
WWE opened its new headquarters at 707 Washington Blvd. in 2023. The building stands 13 stories tall and covers around 400,000 square feet. It was a strange and messy situation outside WWE’s corporate home, as a flag from the building turned into a fire hazard and knocked out power for thousands of people in the area.
