WWE didn’t waste much time turning the brand-new John Cena Classic Championship into merchandise, but the price tag is already getting absolutely cooked online. Fans who want Cena’s latest title sitting on their shelf are going to have to cough up a pretty ridiculous amount of cash.
WWE Shop announced on Twitter that a limited-edition replica of the John Cena Classic Championship is now available for purchase. The problem? WWE has slapped an $800 price tag on it. That number immediately set people off. One fan compared buying the replica to making a pretty serious monthly payment.
“The greed never fails to amaze me, $800 for a belt? That’s damn near a mortgage payment 😮💨”
Another couldn’t believe WWE was asking that much money for a replica championship considering how expensive everyday life already is: “charging $800 in this economy for a toy belt is crazy 😭” Others didn’t need nearly as many words to make their feelings clear.
“800 bucks???? Nah, yall can keep that”
Another fan went after what they believed the belt actually costs to manufacture and called the entire thing a ripoff: “$800 for a toy belt that only takes $40 to make. What a ripoff. Garbage man.” And then there was one fan who skipped the economics lesson entirely.
“Get f****** for $800.”
The backlash comes just one day after Cena unveiled the championship during the November 2 episode of RAW at Barclays Center. WWE created the belt specifically for the John Cena Classic, which takes place December 14 at Disney World in Orlando.
The championship itself features a black leather strap, a large gold center plate, Cena’s signature and an image of him performing his trademark salute. Whoever wins the tournament will receive the championship, with Cody Rhodes already announced as the first participant.
Limited-edition WWE replica titles have never exactly been impulse-buy territory, but $800 is enough to make even some hardcore collectors think twice. Cena’s name might be all over this one, but judging by the early reaction, plenty of fans would rather admire it from a distance than put that kind of damage on their bank account.
