Triple H is getting absolutely hammered by WWE fans over the decision to put Lil Yachty in a match with Baron Corbin at Sunday Night’s Main Event.
The backlash exploded after Triple H jumped on Twitter to promote the newly announced match, which will see Yachty attempt to survive five minutes against the United States Champion on September 6. Triple H tried to sell the whole thing as a fight for survival.
“It’s not about having your first match. It’s about survival. Lil Yachty. Baron Corbin. Sunday Night’s Main Event.”
Fans immediately buried the idea, and plenty of the replies weren’t just criticizing the match. They were blaming Triple H and WWE creative for wasting television time and pushing celebrity involvement while actual wrestlers sit on the sidelines. One fan told Triple H to stop booking altogether.
“You gotta put the pen down dawg you’ve lost your damn mind.”
Another called the entire thing “stupid booking” and blasted WWE for giving Yachty the spot while other talent could be used.
“What a waste of time. Stupid booking from the Dofuss son in law. Lil Yachty has a chance? Sure.”
Another fan questioned why WWE could find room for Yachty on Sunday Night’s Main Event while Ilja Dragunov went months without being used before leaving the company.
“Bro you dumb? Lily yatchy can get a slot in main event but you can’t find something for Ilja? That’s why a lifelong fan like me (30 years) has stopped watching.”
That wasn’t an isolated complaint either. Other responses brought up Carmelo Hayes, Giulia and Jordynne Grace as wrestlers fans would rather see getting the television time. One fan simply asked:
“Did a single person on this planet ask for this.”
Another went even harder on Triple H’s version of WWE, calling the product “pathetic garbage” and saying Triple H should resign or be fired if things don’t improve. Others complained about WWE’s continued reliance on celebrity matches, with one fan saying there are plenty of wrestlers “sitting in the back” who should be getting those opportunities instead.
The anger comes after Yachty got involved in Trick Williams’ problems with Baron Corbin on the August 21 episode of SmackDown. Yachty attacked Corbin with a Singapore cane after the United States Champion refused to give Trick another title shot. Corbin then offered a deal. Yachty has to survive five minutes against him at Sunday Night’s Main Event. If Yachty lasts the full five minutes, Trick gets another United States Championship match. If Corbin beats him before time expires, Trick is out of chances.
WWE clearly sees the celebrity involvement as another attraction for Sunday Night’s Main Event. Judging by Triple H’s replies, though, plenty of fans see it as another example of exactly what they believe is wrong with WWE creative right now. Instead of getting people excited for Yachty’s first match, Triple H’s promotional post turned into a firing squad of fans accusing him of wasting roster talent, forcing celebrity involvement and taking WWE in the wrong direction.
Do you think fans are right to blame Triple H for booking Lil Yachty vs. Baron Corbin, or is the backlash completely over the top? Let us know what you think and leave your feedback in the comments.
