Former WWE Superstar Joseph Sawyer didn’t just show up at GCW. He made sure nobody in the building would forget it, and it had to do with Bray Wyatt.
During GCW Rude on August 1, the lights suddenly went out in the middle of the show. For a few seconds, the arena was left wondering what was coming next. Then the lights came back on. Standing in the ring was the former Joe Gacy.
Atticus Cogar barely had time to react before Sawyer planted him with Sister Abigail, the very move fans watched him use as part of WWE’s Wyatt Sicks. The crowd immediately erupted as Sawyer stood over Cogar before picking up the GCW championship and raising it high above his head.
He didn’t have to say a word. The message was obvious. He’s coming for Atticus Cogar’s title. Sawyer wasn’t done sending messages there either. Shortly after the shocking appearance, he took to Twitter to make his next move official.
“See you at Homecoming @GCWrestling_”
Considering Sawyer was one of the key members of the Wyatt Sicks before WWE released the faction earlier this year, using that move in his first major GCW appearance immediately caught fans’ attention. Whether it’s simply the move he now considers his own or a deliberate nod to Bray Wyatt’s legacy remains open to interpretation.
Either way, Sawyer has wasted absolutely no time making noise since leaving WWE. Just one week after winning his first post-WWE match at Wrestling REVOLVER, he’s already crashed GCW, laid out one of the company’s biggest stars, and put himself squarely in the title picture. If this was meant to announce the next chapter of Joseph Sawyer’s career…Mission accomplished.
