Elayna Black had already planned her return to wrestling long before fans realized it. In fact, the former WWE star admits she even let people believe she had retired to make sure her TNA debut stayed a surprise.
Speaking on the I Love Wrestling Podcast, Black opened up about making her surprise debut during TNA Wrestling’s AMC premiere and revealed she’d actually known for months that it was happening. The confusion started after Black announced she was taking a break from wrestling. Fans quickly turned that into rumors that she had quietly retired, something she says wasn’t true.
“Yeah, that was great. You know, I had known for, you know, a few months prior that I was going to debut on the AMC premiere, but everyone kind of, because I said I was taking a break, you know how the internet is, they take one thing and run with it or twist it or whatever the case may be.”
At first, she tried not to let the comments get to her. People constantly told her she’d retired, questioned whether she still loved wrestling, and assumed her career was over, even though she’d never actually said that.
“Everyone, I was getting comments every single day: ‘You’re retired. You retired. You suck. You don’t love wrestling,’ blah, blah, blah. And at first it bothered me because I’m like, ‘Do you not read? Like, I said I was taking a break. I didn’t say I was retiring.’”
Once Black knew TNA was bringing her in, though, she looked at the situation differently. Instead of correcting everyone, she realized the rumors were doing exactly what she needed them to do. If fans thought she had retired, nobody was going to be expecting her to suddenly show up on TNA television.
“But then it got to the point kind of where I was like, when I knew I was coming to TNA and I knew I was coming back, that I kind of just started to run with it because I didn’t want anyone to know.”
That even carried over to fan interactions away from social media. Black said people would ask her at meet-and-greets why she had retired, and rather than spoil the surprise, she simply played along.
“I wanted it to be a surprise. I wanted it to be completely out of nowhere. So, when people were coming up to me at meet-and-greets asking why I retired, or tweeting me or whatever the case may be, I was just kind of running with it, and I was like, ‘Yeah, you know, yeah, sure, I’m retired. Whatever.’”
By that point, Black already knew exactly when she would be back. She wasn’t debating whether to wrestle again or weighing different options behind the scenes. Her return had already been mapped out, and she was simply waiting for January to arrive.
“Because I knew that I was going to be coming to TNA in January and having my debut on AMC. So, I think it came off great. I think everyone was truly surprised, which is what I wanted. And obviously being part of the AMC premiere was incredible too.”
Black made her surprise appearance on the January 15 episode of TNA iMPACT, where she was introduced by authority figure Daria Rae as TNA’s newest signing. She later signed a one-year deal with the company through the end of 2026 after stepping away from wrestling for six months.
Looking back now, Black says the retirement rumors ended up helping more than hurting. Fans believed she was finished with wrestling, while she already knew she’d be walking through the curtain on TNA’s biggest television premiere in years.
