Dominik Mysterio didn’t get much time to worry about what comes next after losing the AAA Mega Championship. His next major opponent may already be waiting, and recent events have made a match WWE was considering considerably easier to pull off.
All signs currently point toward Dominik facing CM Punk at WWE x AAA Worlds Collide on September 26 in Chicago. There is an indication the match could happen, especially now that both men have suddenly lost the championships they were holding.
Ringside News first reported that Punk vs. Dominik had been discussed for Worlds Collide before either title change happened. At that point, the match wasn’t official and WWE was still figuring out exactly what Punk would be doing on the Chicago card.
A lot has changed since then. Punk lost the Undisputed WWE Championship to Sami Zayn on the September 11 episode of SmackDown. Two nights later, Dominik’s AAA Mega Championship reign came crashing down at TripleManía 34 Night Two.
Dominik defended against El Grande Americano in a chaotic No DQ match that eventually saw JD McDonagh, Rayo and Bravo Americano, Omos and Liv Morgan all get involved. After the original referee went down, Americano connected with a running headbutt and had Dominik beaten, but nobody was there to make the count.
That’s when Rey Mysterio showed up. Rey came down wearing a referee shirt and neck brace, slid into the ring and personally counted his own son’s shoulders down. Americano left as AAA Mega Champion, while Dominik was suddenly free of the title heading into Worlds Collide.
Punk and Dominik also have enough history that WWE wouldn’t need to invent a reason for them to fight. Dominik was Punk’s first opponent following his WWE return in 2023, with Punk beating him at live events in Madison Square Garden and Los Angeles.
Dominik later interfered in Punk’s Steel Cage match against GUNTHER in Chicago, helping GUNTHER retain before joining the attack afterwards. Punk responded by calling Dominik a “greasy twat,” while the two continued taking shots at each other after that.
Now the timing looks much cleaner than when Ringside News first reported the match was being discussed. Punk no longer has the Undisputed WWE Championship, Dominik no longer has the AAA Mega Championship, and Worlds Collide happens to be taking place in Punk’s backyard.
Nothing has been officially announced yet, but the pieces are falling into place. Two title losses within 48 hours may have cleared the road for the Second City Saint and Dominik Mysterio to finally pick up where they left off.
