Tony Khan popping up on Dark Side of the Ring Season 7 was not some long, carefully negotiated plan. It basically came together on the spot.
While speaking on Talk Is Jericho, Husney said the new season includes a massive three-part, three-hour story centered on Jeff Jarrett and the rise of TNA Wrestling. He made it clear this is not just a standard Jeff Jarrett career recap, but a deep look at how TNA came together and all the chaos that followed.
“It was, you know, this… we’re doing this big epic three-part, three-hour episode specifically about Jeff Jarrett and the rise of TNA. Not necessarily a career bio on Jeff, but more so the formation of TNA as a company and all of the roller coaster ride of drama, backstabbing, betrayal, and all that stuff therein.”
That is where Tony Khan entered the picture. Since Jarrett currently works for AEW, the Dark Side crew went backstage to film B-roll with him. Then Jarrett floated the idea of having Tony sit down and talk about where Jeff is now, and Husney immediately saw the value in it.
“Of course, Jeff working for AEW now, we went backstage… we filmed some B-roll with Jeff and then he was like, ‘Hey, what if Tony sat down to speak a little bit about me, in terms of where I’m at now and things like that?’ And I was like, ‘That’d be awesome.’”
The wild part is that it happened the same day. Husney said Khan was already a fan of the series, had watched the episodes, and was eager to talk not just about Jarrett, but wrestling in general. So what could have been some long-planned executive appearance apparently turned into a pretty unexpected bonus for the season.
“It was that day. Yes. And it was just cool. He’s a fan of the show. He watches the show. He’s seen all the episodes… he was just so keen to speak about Jeff, but just obviously to speak about wrestling as, you know, he’s just a huge fan and he knows a lot about it. So it was great. It was so unexpected, but it was very cool.”
Chris Jericho also pointed out why Tony taking part is a bigger deal than it may seem. He said getting Khan on the show is massive because it is not something fans would expect from top WWE figures like Vince McMahon or Triple H.
“I was just thinking how huge that is to have him involved. It’d be like if you had Vince on or Triple H on. Those guys would never do this show.”
Jericho also said Tony’s involvement could make it easier for other wrestling names to say yes in the future. His point was pretty simple: if the AEW president is willing to sit down for Dark Side of the Ring, it becomes harder for others to act like the show is something they should avoid.
“I think having Tony on would probably dispel any future, ‘I don’t know if I want to be involved in this.’ Well, Tony Khan did it.”
Khan’s interview will be part of the three-part TNA documentary when Dark Side of the Ring Season 7 premieres on July 7. Between the expanded look at TNA’s rise and one of wrestling’s biggest promoters sitting down for the series, VICE is clearly treating the Jarrett story as the centerpiece of the new season
