“Dangerous” Danny Davis isn’t joining the pile-on when it comes to Vince McMahon.
During a new interview with Wrestling Epicenter, the former WWE referee and wrestler was asked about his thoughts on McMahon, and Davis made it clear that his personal experience with Vince is the reason he refuses to bury him. Davis said flat-out that without McMahon, his life could have gone in a much darker direction.
“Without Vince McMahon, I would either be dead or in jail. Now, I’m not saying Vince McMahon is an angel. I’m just saying that to me, in my life, without Vince McMahon, I would be dead or in jail. I owe a lot of my success to Vince McMahon and I won’t say anything bad about him for that reason.”
That’s a pretty strong statement, especially with McMahon still surrounded by controversy. Davis didn’t try to call Vince perfect, but he made it clear that the former WWE boss changed the course of his life and career.
Davis also recalled McMahon being direct with him when it came to business. According to Davis, Vince once told him that certain decisions weren’t personal, but were about protecting the company.
“Vince McMahon was a businessman. He told me once, I’m telling you this not to be cruel but because I have a business that I have to protect.”
Davis said that made sense to him, adding that sometimes success requires being vicious. That pretty much sums up how he views Vince: not an angel, not soft, but someone who gave him a real shot when he needed it.
The interview also covered Davis’ long wrestling career, including his heel referee run, WrestleMania III, action figures, Owen Hart rib stories, and his induction into the New England Music Hall of Fame. Still, his comments about McMahon stood out because he didn’t dance around how much Vince meant to his life.
Davis may know all the headlines surrounding Vince McMahon, but his own stance is simple. Vince helped him make something of himself, and because of that, he won’t speak badly about him.
