CM Punk and Cody Rhodes nearly turned a WWE live event into a full-blown fight—and Danhausen had to come running out in a towel to shut it down.
Punk and Rhodes teamed up at WWE’s July 25 live event in Stockton, California, where they faced Gunther and Sami Zayn in a rematch from Saturday Night’s Main Event. They got the win, but the tension between them never went away.
Punk and Rhodes were clearly irritated with each other throughout the match, and things nearly exploded after the final bell. The two Undisputed WWE Championship rivals stepped toward each other and looked ready to start swinging. That is when Danhausen rushed down to the ring wearing nothing but a towel and tried to calm both men down. The strange intervention worked. Punk, Rhodes and Danhausen eventually stood together in the ring to close the show instead of tearing each other apart.
The moment came after Punk and Rhodes took personal shots at each other during SmackDown. The two have shown respect in the past, but that respect is disappearing fast with their SummerSlam title match getting closer. Punk will defend the Undisputed WWE Championship against Rhodes at SummerSlam, and WWE is no longer pretending this is just a friendly battle between two top stars. The tension is boiling over everywhere—even at live events.
Danhausen may have stopped the fight in Stockton, but there will be nobody standing between Punk and Rhodes when the title is on the line at SummerSlam.
