Cody Rhodes has seen what happens when wrestling history gets twisted, and he’s not letting it happen to him.

While speaking on his What Do You Wanna Talk About? podcast, Cody got emotional talking about Dusty Rhodes and how people can suddenly change the story once things go bad. He brought up an old Gary Hart video that he still sends to people because, to Cody, it explains exactly what happened to his father’s legacy.

“There’s something that there’s a video, it’s out there. I send it to people every now and then. It’s a Gary Hart of all people, manager Gary Hart, and he’s talking about Dusty. And this video is so important to me and people don’t understand why when I send it to them.”

The American Nightmare said Hart described Crockett as a wasteland before Dusty Rhodes got there. Then business picked up, the boys started making real money, and suddenly everybody was living better.

“I don’t think they get why because I usually send it as my way of letting them know that you’re in that territory now. But he’s talking about Crockett and how it was a wasteland when Dusty got there. And the next thing you know, guys went from driving, you know, Hondas with matching rims that weren’t matching. They’re lined up at the Mercedes. The next thing you know, they’ve traded in their duffels for Louis Vuittons.”

But Cody said once things got rough, the same people who benefited from Dusty’s success turned around and blamed him for the fall: “And then all that wealth and prosperity, and when it got bad, the same guy they blame for being good, it’s now his fault. And he specifically said the words no loyalty.”

That clearly stayed with Cody. He said watching people try to rewrite Dusty’s story made him serious about documenting his own career. He wants the receipts out there, so nobody can come along later and twist things into whatever version helps them.

“There’s this bond over it, but it’s also created in me. Maybe it is actually a little bit of the negativity, but it’s created in me. It’s why I try to document everything because I’m not having any motherf**** rewrite my story.”

Cody Rhodes said he has already seen people talk about moments they weren’t even around for, and he’s not interested in being anyone’s scapegoat, making it clear he won’t let what happened to his father happen to him.

“And when I hear about s*** like y’all weren’t there, I was there. If you need me to be the scapegoat for your bulls***, go ahead. But like you won’t do that to me in the same way you did it to him and he didn’t have the luxury.”

That’s also why the podcast matters to him. The American Nightmare said he likes having his version of events out there because in today’s world, the receipts exist whether people like the story or not.

“One of the reasons I love this podcast, I tell people I don’t, but one of the reasons I love it because it’s out there. I can put this out there. You heard it, you know, and oh, it’s a Cody lie and all that. Nobody the way in this information age, the receipts are out there. Does it fit your narrative? No. Is your favorite wrestler not involved? But I was probably.”

Bottom line, Cody Rhodes saw what happened to Dusty’s legacy when people needed someone to blame, and he is not letting history repeat itself. He is documenting his own story now, so nobody gets to come along later and rewrite it for him.
