Cody Rhodes got his revenge on Randy Orton at WWE Crown Jewel, but anyone expecting him to celebrate afterwards didn’t get much out of The American Nightmare. WWE caught up with Rhodes after the match, and he pretty much shut the conversation down before it could get going.
WWE uploaded new footage after Rhodes defeated Orton in their brutal Last Man Standing Match in Riyadh. When Rhodes was asked whether he felt like a weight had been lifted after finally beating Orton, he admitted he wasn’t in the right headspace to answer.
“I want to answer your question. I should answer your question, but I feel like I’m not in a place to do so at the moment. So, respectfully, no comment. Enjoy the rest of Crown Jewel. I apologize.”
Rhodes then walked away without really getting into what was going through his head. Considering what he had just done to Orton, there was probably plenty to process. Their Crown Jewel opener was an absolute war, with steel steps, kendo sticks, trash cans, tables and a ladder all getting involved. Orton even sent Rhodes crashing through a table after Cody tried to launch himself from a ladder near the announce desk.
Things got especially nasty near the finish. Rhodes hit multiple Cross Rhodes and left Orton bleeding after The Viper collided with the steel steps, but Cody still wasn’t satisfied. Instead of allowing referee Charles Robinson to finish counting Orton down, Rhodes stopped him and delivered Orton’s own Punt Kick. That finally left The Viper unable to answer the ten-count and gave Cody the victory.
Rhodes also had to deal with a pretty hostile crowd along the way. Portions of the Riyadh audience repeatedly chanted “Overrated!” and “You suck!” at him throughout the match, adding another wrinkle to what was already a very personal fight.
Cody got the victory he wanted, but his reaction afterwards definitely wasn’t that of someone ready to pop champagne and celebrate. Whatever was running through his head after punting Orton and finally settling the score, Rhodes clearly wasn’t ready to talk about it yet.
