Cody Rhodes still isn’t saying whether WWE ever actually planned to put him in the ring with The Rock. What he will say is that he personally believes The Rock might still have a couple of matches left in him — and Cody isn’t ruling out being involved in one of them.
Speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Cody was taken back to Elimination Chamber in Perth, where he publicly called out The Rock for a one-on-one match. Van Vliet wanted to know whether that challenge was actually supposed to lead somewhere.
“Oh my gosh, that’s such a deep—”
Cody initially sidestepped the question by remembering the massive production surrounding the show, including the pyro being fired from barges on the water. Van Vliet eventually brought him right back to the question and asked point-blank whether Cody vs. The Rock was going to happen.
“Oof. It’s not that I’m evading that answer. It’s that I don’t really know how to answer because I think, personally, he has a couple of matches probably left to do. I think that personally.”
Cody never confirmed that WWE had a match between them booked or even formally planned. Instead, he explained that he can also see a scenario where The Rock decides his WrestleMania 40 appearance was the perfect way to finish his in-ring career.
“But I also know, looking at WrestleMania 40 — and another guy who has given all, continues to give all as part of the board — he could easily say that was a great final piece as a performer in a wrestling ring.”
Ultimately, Cody Rhodes believes that decision belongs entirely to The Rock. If he wants to wrestle again, Cody thinks there are still matches on the table, but nobody else can make that call for him.
“That’ll be up to him. That’ll certainly be up to him, if there’s more and what those matches might be.”
As for whether Cody himself would want one of those matches, there wasn’t much mystery there. He made it clear that practically any wrestler would jump at the opportunity to share the ring with The Rock.
“I don’t think any wrestler would ever look you in the eye and tell you they wouldn’t want a match like that.”
Cody also believes WWE is currently in such an unpredictable period that it’s difficult to completely dismiss almost any major match. He pointed to the company’s continued momentum and argued that wrestling fans are watching an era where unexpected things can still happen.
“This isn’t me trying to justify anything, but, yeah, no, you are part of an era that’s the most unpredictable time in wrestling, really. It’s unpredictable.”
That’s where Cody finally left the door open for the match everyone has been wondering about. He still wouldn’t say that Cody Rhodes vs. The Rock was ever officially the plan, but he isn’t ready to say it’ll never happen either.
“So maybe a match like that does happen. Maybe.”
Back in June, Cody had already described his issues with The Rock as an “unfinished story,” while refusing to guarantee that wrestling fans would ever get a proper ending. His latest comments don’t change that uncertainty, but they do show that Cody himself believes The Rock may not necessarily be finished inside the ring.
Whether one of those potential matches ends up being against Cody is another question entirely. For now, Cody isn’t confirming there was ever a concrete plan for them to wrestle, but he’s leaving just enough room for The Final Boss to decide there’s still some business left to handle.
