Cody Rhodes isn’t losing sleep over Sami Zayn walking away while GUNTHER attacked him on SmackDown last week.
While speaking to ESPN, Cody was asked about Zayn turning his back on him after their May 22 SmackDown main event. The interviewer framed it as a betrayal, but Cody didn’t seem interested in giving Sami that much credit: “Betrayal is a dramatic word. I like a bit of drama, but I am phlegmatic in my outlook on Sami Zayn.” The American Nightmare then made it clear that he sees Sami’s actions as nothing more than pettiness: “I am unfazed by his petty ass—and that’s all it is. It’s petty. Petty.”
The comments came after Cody defeated Sami Zayn in a non-title match on the May 22 episode of SmackDown. The match saw both men push each other hard, with Zayn targeting Cody’s leg and nearly putting him away with the Blue Thunder Bomb and Figure-4. GUNTHER eventually got involved and tried to choke out Cody, but Zayn briefly stopped him. Cody then hit Zayn with Cross Rhodes to win the match.
After the bell, GUNTHER attacked Cody again and locked him in a sleeper. Zayn had a chance to step back in, but instead, he left the ring and started walking to the back as GUNTHER stood tall with the Undisputed WWE Championship.
The Undisputed WWE Champion may not be calling it betrayal, but he clearly didn’t forget what Sami did. With GUNTHER waiting for him at Clash in Italy, Cody now has another issue hanging over him after SmackDown.
