CM Punk already has SmackDown on his schedule tonight, but he just made another appearance official.
The new Undisputed WWE Champion took to his Instagram Story and confirmed he’ll also be at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18 at Madison Square Garden. He didn’t say why he’s showing up, and WWE hasn’t announced any plans for him yet. That mystery is the story.
Punk just walked out of Chicago with the WWE Championship after ending Sami Zayn’s nine-day reign, and reports already suggest he’s about to become the centerpiece of SmackDown going forward. Now WWE has confirmed fans won’t have to wait long to see him again after this week’s blue brand.
What happens in New York is where things get interesting. Saturday Night’s Main Event already has Danhausen facing JD McDonagh and Paige and Brie Bella defending the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships, but adding Punk to the show instantly gives WWE another major attraction without revealing a single detail.
That leaves plenty of possibilities. Madison Square Garden could be where Punk addresses the WWE Universe as champion for the first time in New York. It could also be where WWE introduces the first major challenger of his title reign—or kicks off an entirely different direction.
For now, WWE isn’t saying. Punk only confirmed he’ll be there. Everything else is still under wraps, which is exactly the kind of question WWE wants fans asking heading into one of its biggest television specials of the summer.
