CM Punk’s “Pipe Bomb 2.0” promo just got even more interesting — because he says WWE wasn’t fully in the loop about what he’d say.

After previously explaining that the promo was fueled by real frustration across WWE, CM Punk has now revealed that the company didn’t have full control over what he said that night. Speaking on the Pod Meets World podcast on April 18, 2026, Punk opened up about how much of the promo was actually planned.

When asked directly whether WWE knew everything he was going to say, Punk made it clear that’s never really the case when he has a microphone. He then explained how promos are typically handled behind the scenes, pointing out that not every wrestler works the same way when it comes to scripting.

“I can confidently say that they never know everything that I’m going to say. In our world, you have producers who work with you. Some people are written things, other people are given bullet points. Other people—they kind of cross their fingers and are like, ‘Please don’t get us thrown off the air.’”

The Second City Saint went on to describe where he fits into that system, making it clear he operates with a level of freedom — but not total chaos.

“I’m somewhere in between there. But yeah, they did not know everything I was going to say.”

The conversation then shifted to how much he personally had planned going into the promo. Punk admitted he knew the key points he wanted to hit — but also had to keep himself in check in the moment. Even with that mindset, he acknowledged that the intensity of being out there still led to a slip.

“I knew there were some things I had to address, and I had to just tell myself not to swear. I think I said ‘b****,’ and I still didn’t want to do that—but sometimes you’re in the pocket. My thing was don’t drop F-bombs—and thankfully, I didn’t do that.”

With Punk confirming WWE didn’t know everything he was going to say, it puts his “Pipe Bomb 2.0” promo in a different light — especially considering how closely his words tied into real frustrations behind the scenes.

Do you think WWE should let CM Punk keep that kind of freedom on the mic, or is it too risky in today’s environment? Let me know your thoughts.
