CM Punk apparently wants to be a bad guy again. The problem is he thinks turning heel right now would be bad for business.

Speaking during Self Made Sessions, Self Made Pro revealed where Punk currently stands on another heel run in WWE. The subject came up during a discussion about Punk’s previous comments that fans like him too much for a heel turn to really work. Self Made Pro says Punk would absolutely love to do it.

“He’d love to be a bad guy again.”

That desire apparently isn’t the thing keeping Punk babyface. According to Self Made Pro, Punk simply doesn’t think turning heel makes business sense right now.

“He’d love to be a bad guy again. He’s of the belief that, like, that’s just bad business right now.”

Punk may not be getting a full heel turn, but he’s about to get a pretty good preview. He and Kevin Owens are heading into an Undisputed WWE Championship match in Toronto after their August 14 SmackDown confrontation got deeply personal. Owens dragged their issues from nearly 20 years ago into the open, while Punk fired back by calling Owens wasted potential and questioning how far his career would have gone if Punk had been around for some of his biggest moments.

With Owens heading home to Canada, Punk apparently has no illusions about who Toronto is going to treat like the bad guy. Self Made Pro said Punk is “extremely aware” that he’s walking into a massive heel reaction and has actually been cutting his promos with that exact response in mind.

“CM Punk is extremely aware that he’s going to be a massive heel in Toronto, and everything he’s done in his promos was done with the mindset of, ‘I’m going to go into Toronto as a bad guy.’”

So Punk isn’t fighting the crowd on this one. He’s apparently been preparing to walk into Toronto as the heel from the beginning, even if WWE isn’t officially changing his character.

That gives Punk a chance to scratch that heel itch without actually pulling the trigger. Toronto gets a CM Punk who’s ready to be hated, Kevin Owens gets the hometown crowd firmly behind him, and WWE gets to see exactly what another Punk heel run could look like without committing to one.
