CJ Perry’s Bulletproof Angel isn’t just being positioned as something that could maybe become a movie someday. According to Perry, the wheels are already turning on a film adaptation — and she’s planning to be behind the camera rather than making herself the star.

During an appearance on TMZ’s Inside the Ring alongside Rusev, Perry was asked whether she wanted to keep writing after Bulletproof Angel and potentially turn the upcoming spy thriller into a larger franchise. Perry said she’d love to continue the story, but then casually dropped the much bigger update that a movie is already in development.

“I would love that, you know. So, go buy the book so we can make that happen. But also, it is going to be made into a movie. We’re already in the works of it.”

That caught the hosts off guard, and Perry explained that work has already started on putting the project together. She described Bulletproof Angel as a James Bond-style spy thriller with female leads and said they’re currently working on the packaging for the movie.

“Yes. So, very exciting. We’re already starting working on the packaging because, you know, it’s like a James Bond spy thriller, the book. But, you know, there’s some women leads, which is really exciting. So, yeah, we’re in the works.”

That’s a pretty big jump from where things stood when the project was announced. Bulletproof Angel had already been connected to a book-to-film initiative with Paradigm, but that didn’t necessarily mean an adaptation was actually moving forward. Perry is now saying there’s active work being done on turning it into a movie.

And if anyone expected Perry to automatically cast herself as the lead, that apparently isn’t the plan. She said she wants a bigger-name actress who can help move the needle, while Perry herself intends to work as a producer and maybe sneak into the movie for a cameo.

“No, no, no. We’re going to get a bigger actress, like a bigger name. I’m producing it, though. And I might, you know, I’ll probably do a little cameo because why not? I love acting, and it’s so fun. But the biggest thing for me as a producer is I want to get names that move the needle, the best actresses. And as even though I’m phenomenal, there’s people that are better.”

Rusev could end up getting in on the action too, although apparently nobody bothered telling him before the interview. When the conversation turned to whether he’d have to audition, Perry revealed that she and co-author Blake Northcott had already discussed bringing him into the project. Rusev’s response was pretty simple — he was finding out about the whole thing live on TMZ.

Perry said Northcott actually came to her with the idea of using Rusev as a character before she even had the chance to pitch it herself. The conversation suggested he could potentially play a villain, although Perry didn’t announce any finalized casting deal. The movie also appears to be further along creatively than Perry is willing to fully spill right now. With Bulletproof Angel set to be released on November 10, she revealed that they already have a director involved — she just isn’t ready to say who it is.

“Well, the book comes out November 10th, and so we’re working on the packaging and stuff like that. I can’t give all the tea away, but we got a really good director on board. So, can’t give the names yet. I’m really excited.”

There’s still plenty that has to happen before Bulletproof Angel actually ends up on a movie screen, and Perry didn’t announce a cast, production date or release date. But with Perry producing, a director apparently already attached and packaging underway, this has clearly moved beyond simply hoping Hollywood eventually comes calling.
