Chelsea Green didn’t exactly get some huge meeting about turning babyface in WWE. According to Green, the fans made that decision themselves—and eventually WWE just told her she couldn’t be a heel anymore.
While speaking to Chris Van Vliet, Green was told that her recent rise felt similar to KofiMania or Daniel Bryan’s organic connection with the audience. Green admitted she can feel that support herself, especially when fans act like they’ve personally claimed her as their wrestler.
“Isn’t that crazy? And I feel it like I really do. I feel that the people are like, no, that’s our girl, and you’re gonna treat her right. You’re gonna give her what she deserves and you’re gonna listen to her. And I’m like, wow.”
Green isn’t pretending that wrestling fans will feel that way forever. She knows how quickly things can change, but right now she believes everything has lined up at exactly the right moment for the audience to get behind her.
“I mean, look, the pendulum always swings the other way. So like, eventually they’ll turn on me. But for right now, in this moment, it’s all happening at the right time. Yeah. Like, it’s just the perfect moment for them to be behind me, for me to be turning baby face.”
That’s where Green revealed how WWE actually handled her babyface turn. There apparently wasn’t some elaborate conversation about changing her character or reinventing what she was doing. One day, WWE simply told her that being a heel wasn’t really an option anymore.
“Like just one day they were like, okay, well you can’t be heel anymore.”
The funny part is that WWE didn’t actually want Green to change the character. She could keep acting exactly like Chelsea Green. The company just recognized that the audience had already made its decision and trying to force things back the other way wasn’t going to work.
“You know, you can act the same, but like the crowd is, they’ve spoken and we can’t go back. Just, it’s all very crazy.”
Green got another reminder of that during WWE’s recent stop in London, Ontario. She said the building was filled with signs supporting her, including “Chelsea for Prime Minister,” while her signature hats seemed to be everywhere she looked.
“And last night in London, Ontario, I heard, I heard the people, I saw the signs. Oh my God, there must have been 20 signs. Like Chelsea for Prime Minister. Just like the cutest signs and so many hats. Hats everywhere I looked, I was like, wow. Like, it’s working. We’re doing the thing.”
Green didn’t need WWE to completely reinvent her to make the turn work. Fans started cheering the exact same character they were supposed to dislike, and eventually WWE apparently realized there was no point trying to talk them out of it. Chelsea Green can keep acting like Chelsea Green. The only difference now is WWE knows the crowd wants to cheer her for it.
