Chelsea Green didn’t return to WWE in 2023 expecting to become one of the company’s biggest women’s stars. She came back thinking she might collect a paycheck for a couple of years before WWE fired her again.
Green opened up about that mindset during INSIGHT with Chris Van Vliet, explaining just how burned out she had become before contacting Triple H about returning to the company.When asked whether she ever believed becoming WWE Women’s Champion was even possible after being released and eventually coming back, Green said she genuinely did not care what WWE gave her when she returned.
“Oh my God, yeah. When I came back in 2023, I don’t care what I’m doing. You want me on TV for two seconds? You want me to, you know, like take the Jaded five weeks in a row? You want me to be the first one out of the Royal Rumble? Don’t care. Just happy to be here.”
That attitude came after nearly a decade of constantly trying to stay booked and grow her career outside WWE. Green said she had been grinding since 2014 and was constantly planning months ahead. Even when she thought she had finished booking one stretch of work, her mind immediately moved on to the next.
“I needed a break. The grind—I had been grinding since 2014 to the point where, like, I was just exhausted because I’m one of those people where I was scheduling work for like three-month chunks at a time. So you think like, ‘Okay, I’ll schedule these three months. I can chill. I’ll do the bookings. I’ll do whatever.’ But like, no, because I was thinking today about what was going to happen three months from tomorrow.”
Green said the constant chase for more bookings, more money and a bigger name eventually became exhausting enough that she texted Triple H and asked for her job back. Even then, Green wasn’t expecting some massive second-act success story.
“I just kept thinking about the booking, booking, booking, making more money, doing more. How can I make my name bigger, my brand bigger? What more can I do? And it was so exhausting by the time that I texted Triple H and asked for my job back in 2023.”
“I was just so thankful to, like, let Jesus take the wheel for at least a couple years. It’s like, until they inevitably fired me again, was my thought. Collect the paycheck, do the job, try to prove them wrong and me right, but like just ride the WWE wave for a second. Which is not any more relaxing. Like, it’s actually just as exhausting, but in a different way.”
That’s a hell of a difference from where Green ended up. She came back expecting another WWE firing somewhere down the road and instead climbed all the way to the Women’s Championship.
