Charlotte Flair may be having fun showing a different side of herself in WWE’s tag-team division, but don’t mistake that for her being content outside the main-event picture. Charlotte still believes she should be one of the company’s main attractions—and marketed like the champion fans have always known her to be.
While speaking with Dave LaGreca on Busted Open Radio, Charlotte addressed her current position after LaGreca admitted he’d initially been frustrated seeing her working in a tag team rather than chasing another singles championship. Charlotte didn’t exactly disagree with the bigger point.
“Do I agree that I should be a main attraction? Yes. Do I—do I think that I should be looked at and marketed like that champion that you’re thinking? Yes.”
That doesn’t mean she views the tag-team run as wasted time. Charlotte believes there’s a bigger picture behind what she’s doing and intends to keep fighting her way toward it.
“But I think being in this tag, whether it’s slow or not for some of my fans, I think there is a bigger picture and that I’m going to keep working towards. Keep fighting for that.”
And Charlotte thinks something interesting has happened while she’s been away from the position fans traditionally associate with her: people may actually want to see her back there more than they did before.
“And I think now people want it more than ever before, right?”
That confidence carried through the rest of the conversation. LaGreca called Charlotte “the greatest of all time,” but Charlotte said hearing that doesn’t make her comfortable. If anything, it gives her another standard she has to keep proving she deserves.
“I wake up in the morning and go, ‘I’m the greatest.’ Yes. But I don’t rest on, like, just people like you saying it. Like, I really want to feel and embody what it means to be the greatest and showing up, and that’s still evolving because I truly believe this was, like, the best year of my career and I’ve never been more versatile.”
That’s particularly meaningful to Charlotte because she believes she produced that year after reaching a point where some people had already started writing her off.
“So I’m like, if I can do that in a year that everyone had kind of, I felt, written me off, imagine what I can do in five years.”
Charlotte isn’t trashing the tag-team run or demanding WWE immediately throw another championship around her waist. She’s enjoying showing people something different. She also hasn’t suddenly forgotten who Charlotte Flair is.
If this is what she can do during a year when she felt people had written her off, Charlotte is already looking at what the next five could bring. And somewhere in that bigger picture, she clearly still sees herself exactly where she’s spent much of her career—front and center.
