Charlotte Flair is opening up about the competitive tension behind her rivalry with Becky Lynch and why she believes that friction actually helped both of them succeed in WWE.
While appearing on TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Charlotte was asked whether real-life tension between wrestlers can help create stronger rivalries on television. That led directly into a discussion about her relationship with Becky Lynch during their rise to the top of WWE’s women’s division. Charlotte admitted that both women were fiercely competitive and determined to become the face of the division.
“I think with Becky and I, we both wanted to be on top. It was just like with Sasha and I. We both wanted to be on top.”
Charlotte explained that level of ambition naturally creates friction backstage. She also made it clear she doesn’t believe wrestlers should be satisfied with anything less than becoming the top star.
“Anytime you get two alphas in the room and they want to be the best, there’s gonna be tension. And I think that’s how it should be.”
“If you’re not in the game to be the best, then what are you doing?”
Even with the tension between them, Charlotte said the rivalry ultimately made both women better performers. Charlotte added that real competition is one of the biggest driving forces behind success in professional wrestling.
“As she got better, I got better. As I got better, she got better.”
“You want that. You want competition. Competition breeds competition. It’s how you get better.”
Charlotte Flair and Becky Lynch may have had real pressure and intensity behind the scenes, but according to Charlotte, that edge helped push both women to another level during one of WWE’s most important rivalries.
