Chad Gable just picked up one of the biggest wins of his Intercontinental Championship reign—and Rey Mysterio made sure he got his respect afterward.
Gable successfully defended the title against the WWE Hall of Famer on the August 17 episode of Monday Night RAW, surviving a hell of a fight before finally catching Rey in a pinning combination for the three-count.
Rey came dangerously close to taking the championship more than once. He hit Gable with multiple 619s and went up top looking to finish things with a splash, but Gable got his knees up and immediately went back after Mysterio’s ankle. The two then traded pinning combinations until Gable finally caught him and escaped with the title.
The win was already massive for Gable considering who was standing across from him, but the moment after the bell made it even bigger. Instead of simply walking away, Rey took the Intercontinental Championship and personally wrapped it around Gable’s waist, giving the champion a major show of respect after their battle.
That’s about as strong of an endorsement as Gable could get. He didn’t just beat Rey Mysterio—he beat him with the Intercontinental Championship on the line and then had the WWE legend put the title back around his waist himself.
Gable walked into RAW as champion and walked out with a huge win over a Hall of Famer, plus Rey Mysterio’s respect to go with it.
