Chad Gable is finally giving fans a closer look at the surgery he went through last year, and the procedure turned out to be more serious than expected.
While documenting the situation on his YouTube channel, Gable explained that the operation itself went smoothly and lasted less than an hour. However, once doctors began repairing his torn rotator cuff, they discovered his bicep tendon near the shoulder was in much worse condition than the scans had shown.
“From what I understand, the whole operation took less than an hour. I was in there, we’re done. Surgery went well. Fixed it up just like we were supposed to. But while Dr. Dugas was in there, he found the bicep tendon at the shoulder was pretty much completely shredded to a degree that he did not know because the images don’t always show everything. So when he went in there, the bicep tendon was actually a lot worse than he thought it was. So he repaired that as well since he was in there anyway. So, little bonus surgery for Gable here.”
That meant Gable’s past surgery ended up being more than just a rotator cuff repair. Since Dr. Jeffrey Dugas was already working in the area, he also repaired the badly damaged bicep tendon during the same procedure. Dr. Dugas later told Gable that his ability to keep going with that kind of damage showed just how tough he was. He also made it clear that recovery depended on patience and not trying to come back too quickly.
“The fact that you could even do a little bit with that just speaks to your athleticism. You know, good tissue to work with, good bone. Look, you’re an elite athlete. You’re going to get it all back. It’s just a matter of being patient with it and just trusting the process and not trying to rush it, okay? The people who end up failing are the ones who try to rush it.”
Looking back on the operation, Gable said he was relieved by how well everything went, especially after doctors were able to fix the unexpected bicep issue as well: “So, yeah, everything could not have gone better.”
The update gives fans a better idea of what Gable was dealing with behind the scenes last year. His surgery was already serious, but the discovery of a shredded bicep tendon made it clear his injury situation was worse than many realized.
